In September 1956 on leaving school, I joined the Junior Leaders Regiment, the Royal Engineers. As I arrived at the camp in Cove, near Aldershot I could hear the regimental band practising on the parade ground. That was it! I had to join the band! After spending hours in the nearby woods learning how to blow a trumpet, I became a member of the Junior Leaders
