Portsmouth Ambulance Station. Pre 1959.
This photo shows two Austin Welfarers parked-up at the old station, based in St Mary's Hospital.
The photo shows a Welfarer parked outside, as seen through the Control Room window (looks like the Duty Controller is announcing the BBC News).
The control room was top left as you looked at building from the front. On the ground floor the blood-tub was parked in the first bay under the control room. There were four bays in total but, 'Bunny Austin' (Mechanic) used the right hand bays during the day.
As the fleet grew in size most of the vehicles were parked outside until the move to the new station in 1959.
Thanks to Ron Lilly for the photograph and information.
